An energy research group was formed at Sharif University of Technology in 1992 and the main task of the group was to initiate comprehensive energy studies in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The main findings of the group in early 90s revealed that increase in energy demand, exhaustion of energy resources, lack of availability of new and efficient technologies and barriers to the private & foreign investment would be the major issues and challenges in the energy sector of IRAN. The Persistence of the existing problems could lead to imbalances in energy market which would be the main issue in the coming decade. It was then concluded that the activity of the energy research group should be institutionalized. Therefore, Sharif Energy Research Institute (SERI) was established with the support of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and approval of the Ministry of Science, Research & Technology (MSRT) in IRAN.
The activities of SERI are aimed at developing clean energy carriers and efficient technologies for production, processing, transportation and consumption of energy carriers that would be compatible with local and global environment. Therefore, we feel ourselves responsible for organizing goal oriented research teams and capable researchers in order to contribute to the solution of global energy issues and the human development and build up of analytical capacities in the energy sector of IRAN. For this reason we would like to welcome effective cooperation with individuals and institutions who are actively involved in energy research and development in developing and industrialized countries. We are ready and willing to initiate solid basis for long lasting cooperation with energy institutes in Iran and other countries.
